What the West understood as progress has pushed us beyond planetary boundaries, overused the Earth and devalued other forms of knowledge about nature and earthly materials. We urgently need new ways of thinking about and caring for materiality, both practically and conceptually. Particular attention will be paid to the field of construction, where the materials transition is more urgent than ever[2].

In this workshop, Tim Ingold will introduce us to his fundamental thinking on this challenge. Together, we will discuss the possibilities and limits of rethinking the becoming, assembling and dissolving of materials in the continuity of life.

Prof. Timothy Ingold is one of the most influential and original thinkers in contemporary anthropology, whose work has reshaped how we understand the relationships between people, materials and the living world. With rare clarity and poetic depth, he invites us to see the world not as a collection of finished objects but as a flow of life in which we are all participants, and we are delighted and honoured to welcome him for this workshop. The event takes place in a hybrid format in Hamburg. All participants are invited to bring their own research question related to materials and materiality. The workshop will be chaired by Cordula Kropp and Frank Adloff.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Participation

If you are interested in taking part, please get in touch with Cordula Kropp at cordula.kropp@hias-hamburg.de

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Venue

</details>

[1] Tim Ingold (2024) How to imagine a sustainable world, Acta Borealia, 41:1, 7-15, DOI: 10.1080/08003831.2024.2334163

[2] Cordula Kropp & Simon Aicher (2024): Building the future: Toward a sustainable material transition in architecture and construction.
