This is the largest wave of recorded suicides in human history. At this rate, the toll of half a million deaths by suicide shall be reached soon. If you line up their bodies, they largely cover the whole surface of the Indian territory, from the backwaters of Kerala to the heights of the Himalaya. Since then, every half hour, a farmer succumbs to death by despair.

In his talk at his #TuesdaySpotlight Frédéric Vandenberghe will report from his ethnography in Vidarbha (Maharashtra), the cotton belt of India, and reflect on the agrarian transition in India.

This event is addressed to HIAS Fellows and Tandem Partners.

Image Information

Tirzada, 2024, © Frédéric Vandenberghe

[103
post-8594","events","type-events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","event_type-tuesday-spotlight
["GET
