Doomed from the Start? Institutions in Russia\u2019s Relations with the West<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project includes an in-depth analysis of most remarkable institutions that brought together Russia and the West and will offer a look into the current damaged institutional landscape. Taking as a starting point the ideas of liberal internationalists\u2019 school on the importance of interdependence, the project will answer the question, whether the failure to develop interdependence between Russia and the West had something to do with the design, mandate or specialisation of institutions and legally binding arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sergey Utkin is visiting research fellow at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH) at the University of Hamburg since July 2025. In 2022-24 he was associate professor of international politics at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense. <\/em>Prior to that he worked in Moscow-based think-tanks, primarily the Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences, while teaching part-time university courses on political science and European integration. He received his PhD in political science (international relations) from IMEMO in 2006 for a thesis on common foreign and security policy of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sergey Utkin is researching on the troubled relationship between Russia and the West, Russian foreign policy as well as the EU\u2019s and NATO policies and the functioning of international organisations. Along with a monograph on EU-Russia interaction published in Russian, his publications include Suspicious Neighbour: Russia\u2019s Role in the Quest for the EU\u2019s Strategic Autonomy<\/em>. In: European Foreign Affairs Review<\/em> (2022), Unrealised Potential: the EU and Russia in regional multilateral institution<\/em>s. In: The Routledge Handbook of EU-Russia Relations. Structures, Actors, Issues<\/em>. (2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
