#Tuesday Spotlight by Karolin Machtans
The task we ask asylum applicants to perform in the asylum hearing is supposedly simple: to convince the legal representatives of the receiving country that their fear of persecution is real and their story credible. Yet asylum narratives are never just individual stories. Rather, they are shaped and co-constructed by various actors throughout the asylum process, including other refugees, asylum lawyers, decision-makers, and interpreters. How does contemporary German film engage with the co-constructed nature of the asylum narrative?
In this #Tuesday Spotlight Karolin Machtans shares insight into her current research, using films as a.o. #My Escape by Elke Sasse (WDR, DW, 2015) and discusses the draft chapters of her new publication as work in progress.
This event is addressed to HIAS Fellows and Tandem Partners.
