The Role of International Science Cooperation in Disruptive Times

#Hamburg Forum for Global Science and Policy

Fundamental changes are happening in global relations that pose urgent and profound challenges to the international science system. Political power shifts in many world regions (Europe, the US, BRICS+, conflict areas), and the increasing impact of populist, autocratic and anti-democratic developments are leading to a rebalancing of alliances in global science cooperation. Openness and security are being challenged while the global migration of researchers continues to increase. Peaceful dialogue and cooperation are rising to the top of the list of necessities while science diplomacy seems to shift from a tool of integration to one of demarcation and exclusion. Moreover, the legitimacy of science as a form of knowledge production is being questioned. How can European and German science institutions position themselves in view of these developments? How to adapt international research cooperation policies? How is cooperation with and between countries outside the North-Western part of the world changing?

At a panel discussion these topics will be discussed among several renowned international experts. The Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) is organizing this event under the umbrella of the University of Hamburg’s Hamburg Forum for Global Science and Policy. The event will take place at the Moot Court of the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg and is supported by the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS.
