Project at HIAS
African population exposure to extreme events under climate intervention
During his fellowship at HIAS, Thierry C. Fotso-Nguemo investigates how climate intervention, particularly solar radiation modification (SRM) geoengineering, may influence the exposure of African populations to extreme weather events. The project will combine climate model simulations, population projections and geospatial analysis to assess changes in exposure to extreme precipitation and temperature events, under different global warming and SRM scenarios. Particular attention will be given to the effectiveness, uncertainties and potential regional trade-offs of stratospheric aerosol injection, with the aim of generating evidence relevant to climate risk assessment and adaptation planning in Africa.
Biography
Thierry C. Fotso-Nguemo is a researcher in climate sciences at the National Institute of Cartography in Cameroon, where he is the Head of the Climate Change Research Laboratory (LRCC). His research focuses on the use of climate models to investigate the impact of anthropogenic global warming on climate variability and extreme weather events, as well as their socio-economic implications. He also explores climate intervention techniques to assess their potential effectiveness in mitigating the effects of climate change. He is particularly interested in understanding the influence of human activities on the climate system and developing innovative strategies to address the challenges posed by climate change in order to ensure a sustainable future.
Thierry C. Fotso-Nguemo’s research interests lie at the intersection of climate science, geospatial analysis and climate risk assessment. His main areas of research include climate modelling and projections, extreme weather events, heat stress, population exposure to climate hazards, and the assessment of climate intervention strategy. Overall, his work seeks to strengthen the scientific basis for climate adaptation, risk management and evidence-based climate policy on the African continent.
Thierry C. Fotso-Nguemo‘s HIAS Fellowship is provided by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the federal and state funds acquired by the University of Hamburg in the framework of its Excellence Strategy.
