Science Diplomacy

Science diplomacy has been an integral part of the HIAS mission from its inception.
A significant aspect of the collaborations undertaken by HIAS and its member institutions involves activities that are implicit science diplomacy: Bringing scholars,  scientists, artists, and their research topics and epistemic cultures in dialog with researchers in Hamburg is one dimension of what is referred to as ‘diplomacy in science’.

Within the HIAS global network, stable and long-term cooperation with partner institutions in Latin America and Africa is key. As a member of the European Network of Institutes for Advanced Study (NETIAS), HIAS is actively participating in the network’s debate on how science diplomacy can contribute to future solutions in a context of growing geopolitical pressures and challenges for international research. In its social outreach activities, HIAS has developed a thematic focus on ‘diplomacy in science’, organizing regular public debates in Hamburg, Berlin and Brussels (see below).

HIAS is committed to establishing itself as a regional platform for the exchange of ideas on science diplomacy, thereby connecting with other European academic communities.
