Arts & Research

The arts, as media for critical reflection and as a practice of knowledge, are deeply embedded in the DNA of HIAS. HIAS is a place where the disciplinary boundaries of thought are broken down through aesthetic and artistic means. Reflection on art and aesthetic experience offer a critical yet creative tool for experiencing the world affectively and exploring it intellectually. By combining art and research, HIAS challenges the status quo and imagines the new. Fellowships in the field of art and research provide space for projects in, about, and with art.

Details and Application

We invite applications from cultural practitioners in the visual arts, literature, theater, architecture, dance, and artistic research, as well as art historians, musicologists, aestheticians, semioticians, and others.

Together with our fellows from the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities, they delve into the diverse perspectives of their disciplines through weekly colloquia and other events.

Intellectual curiosity, inter- and transdisciplinary openness, and a shared joy in exchange form the foundation for a stimulating collaborative environment at HIAS. Research projects in the field of art and research are pursued in close collaboration with colleagues and institutions based in Hamburg.
