Deepfakes—Challenges for Democracy, Society, and the Law
Panel Discussion

Realistic, AI-generated images, videos, and voices pose new challenges to democracy, society, and the law. How do deepfakes influence public opinion and trust in information? What risks do they pose to individuals’ personal rights? And what opportunities and limitations exist for addressing these developments through legal and regulatory means?

This event examines these questions from the perspectives of communication studies, political science, and law. The focus is on the societal impacts of deepfakes, the protection of individuals, and European guidelines for regulating artificial intelligence, including the challenges of implementing them.

Our guests are:

  • Nadine Klass, Professor at the University of Augsburg and Co-Director of the Institute for Copyright and Media Law in Munich
  • Linda Kuschel, Assistant Professor of Civil Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Law and Digitalization at Bucerius Law School
  • Judith Möller, Scientific Director of the Leibniz Institute for Media Research and Professor at the University of Hamburg
