Providence and Ruin: Peter Martyr d’Anghiera, Ancient Historiography, and the Fall of Tenochtitlan
Thursday Colloquium

# Thursday Colloquium with Nicoletta Bruno

In her lecture, Nicoletta Bruno explores Peter Martyr d’Anghiera’s De Orbe Novo Decades (1530), the earliest  narrative in Latin about the discovery of the New World and the conquest of Mexico. Focusing on the Fourth and Fifth Decades, which recount Hernán Cortés’s campaign and the fall of Tenochtitlan, she reconsiders Martyr’s work within the frameworks of Renaissance humanism and early colonial historiography. Bruno examines how classical and Christian models shaped the moral and providential interpretation of conquest. The lecture reveals De Orbe Novo as a foundational text in the emergence of a global historical imagination.

This event is addressed to HIAS Fellows and their Tandem Partners.
