Matter, Materials and Societal Materiality in the Anthropocene

What do matter and materials mean in the Anthropocene? During her fellowship at HIAS, Cordula Kropp investigates the diversity and transformation of societal material relations in the context of socio-ecological transformation processes – ranging from the handling of finite resources and global material flows to new materials and an increasingly digital characterisation, valuation, and modelling.

Her Tandem Partner is Frank Adloff, Professor for Sociology, especially Dynamics and Regulation of Economy and Society, and Director of the DFG Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies “Futures of Sustainability” at the University of Hamburg.

Biography

Cordula Kropp is (since 2016) a professor of sociology with a focus on risk and technology studies, as well as director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Risk and Innovation Research (ZIRIUS) at the University of Stuttgart. Prior to this, she was a professor of social sciences innovation and futures studies at Munich University of Applied Sciences.

Her HIAS project builds on her research into society-nature relations in fields such as nature conservation, climate adaptation, urban planning, or energy supply. The overarching question throughout is how conceptual-discursive understandings about what nature is and what this means for society become intertwined with technoscientific capacities to use and shape – but not to master – natural conditions.

Cordula Kropp‘s HIAS Fellowship is provided by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the federal and state funds acquired by the University of Hamburg in the framework of its Excellence Strategy.
