Sugar and Cinnamon, Value Chains and Cheese Sandwiches on Stage
#SummerSchool
At the HIAS Summer School “Eating together. Food, ecology and conviviality”, which took place from 7 to 12 July 2025, international participants from the fields of science, art and other applied disciplines exchanged ideas on the topic of food and its many facets. Doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and artists from Nigeria, Belgium, India, Cuba, Argentina, Turkey, Georgia, Bolivia, the Netherlands and the UK… HAMBURG learned from each other and presented their current research projects. This was experienced as an enormous enrichment and inspiration:
“Everyone comes in with their specific passion for this theme, for food, and then, after our conversations, I understood better how we talk about the same thing but in different ways and how I can connect my research to other points of view.”
For one week, the participants explored this highly relevant global issue in all its social, ethical, ecological, philosophical and economic complexity through lectures, discussions, performances, exhibitions and, of course, cooking and eating together. There was input, inspiration, excitement, heated debates, celebrations and much more – that’s how a summer school should be!
A big thank you to the Claussen-Simon Foundation for its support.
