Oh Seufzen, Heulen, Herzenknall (Love ist all you need) – Lutz Rademacher (Halle 424)
Song cycle by Gordon Kampe with videos by Simon Janssen.
Songs, arias, duets and intermezzi illuminate aspects of love: to distant and near lovers, to nature, to God and, last but not least, to music. Composer Gordon Kampe has chosen love poems from the Baroque period as inspiration for his music, which are almost song in their linguistic rhythm. Yet the texts are often only superficially about love – the verses by Andreas Gryphius, probably the most famous poet of the 17th century, who had to experience the destruction of his hometown in the Thirty Years’ War, always tell of death between the lines. Happiness is fragile and rarely lasting, the varnish of civilisation thin, especially in times of war. Video artist Simon Janssen, on the other hand, shows the fleeting light-heartedness of a mundane moment: the participants celebrating together in the evening, eating, drinking, talking. In addition, the participants talk about their lives, their work and their love of (new) music. As artistic fellow 2021/22, conductor Lutz Rademacher has developed this song cycle with Gordon Kampe and worked it out with the musicians.
