Maryana Yaremko

German Philology, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv

Maryana Yaremko is a Ukrainian Germanist who has been working at the Department of German Philology of the National Ivan Franko University of Lviv since 2006. Her academic and professional career was shaped by her German studies (2001-2006) and her PhD on “Silence in the Berlin Novels of Robert Walser” (2015) at the National Ivan Franco University of Lviv, as well as a semester abroad (2004-2005) and several research stays at Universität Hamburg (2009-2010, 2017, 2019), which took place within the framework of DAAD funding programs under the supervision of Prof. H.-G. Winter.

Maryana Yaremko’s research interests are in the field of linguistic text analysis, pragmatic stylistics, narratology and literary studies.
A main focus of her professional activity is the methodology and didactics of German as a foreign language. Maryana Yaremko is a highly qualified teacher and examiner, trained and certified by the Goethe-Institut, who is engaged both in teaching German at various levels and in supervising teachers within the framework of the “Green Diploma” training program at the SLZ Lviv (partner of the Goethe-Institut Ukraine).

At HIAS, Maryana would like to deepen her research on the semantics of silence in literary communication and provide access to her scientific results to a wider circle of Germanists with a German-language publication.
In addition, she is engaged in preparing the lecture and seminar series for Ukrainian bachelor’s and master’s students in German studies and is working on the textbook and workbook “Analysis of German-language Short Prose” for the bachelor’s program in German studies at the University of Lviv. The purpose of this textbook is to introduce students to working with short literary texts and to strengthen their interest in German-language literature.

Her tandem partner is Hans-Gerd Winter, Professor Emeritus of Modern German Literature at the University of Hamburg and, among other things, Chairman of the International Wolfgang Borchert Society (Hamburg).

Maryana Yaremko’s HIAS Fellowship is funded by the Joachim Herz Foundation.
