Alumni – Project at HIAS
The Here-and-Now: After Violence
What can guilt and innocence still mean in the face of collective crimes of violence? One of the first debates was between Hannah Arendt, who had fled to the USA, and her former doctoral supervisor in Heidelberg, Karl Jaspers. Both discussed the limits of the legal system in the face of National Socialist terror and its consequences. This debate still resonates today, precisely because of Arendt’s Jewish power of judgment. Derived from this, Natan Sznaider’s topic for his alumnus project is the relationship between particularism and universalism as it applies to Jewish life after the founding of the State of Israel.
