Péter Cserne

Law, University of Aberdeen

Currently a reader in law at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, Péter Cserne previously taught at universities in England, the Netherlands, and Hungary. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Hamburg. He has held visiting positions at Columbia University, Oxford University, University of Toronto und Università di Genova and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Private Law in Hamburg. He is an Extramural Fellow of Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC) and the founder and convener of MetaLawEcon, an international academic network for research on the foundations of Law & Economics.

Péter Cserne’s research focuses on comparative, philosophical, and economic analyses of law, especially private law; choice architecture, new technologies and algorithms as objects and alternatives of regulation by law; as well as the history of legal and political thought, especially Max Weber and Central and Eastern Europe.

Having spent five years as Young Fellow of the ZiF in Bielefeld, he is excited about this opportunity of crossing disciplinary boundaries at HIAS. As a fellow his project is to consolidate his research on the foundations of law and economics into a monograph, entitled Sense and Nonsense in Law and Economics: Empirical Science, Practical Philosophy, and Legal Doctrine. He will also work on an English edited collection of Jürgen von Kempski’s writings on law and the social sciences, for Springer’s series ‘Economic Analysis of Law in European Legal Scholarship’.

His collaboration partner is Anne van Aaken, who holds the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for law and economics, theory of law, international and European law at Universität Hamburg and is director at the Institute for Law and Economics at Universität Hamburg.

Péter Cserne‘s HIAS Fellowship is provided by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the federal and state funds acquired by Universität Hamburg in the framework of its Excellence Strategy.
