not without my bicycle

A couple decades ago I was as large as a hippopotamus—being a suburban dad driving my kids around and sharing the food they liked took its toll. I started eating less and biking more—and got much slimmer. So I biked to be healthy. But I discovered along the way that it helps me think—fresh air, sun or even a light mist, and freedom from email allow me to come up with an ideas, each one of which then takes me a day or so sitting in front of my computer to write up.

Nathan J. Brown currently serves as Professor of Political Science and International Affairs and Nonresident Senior Associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. His research has focused on issues of constitutionalism, the rule of law, Islam and politics, and democracy in the Arab world. He has also explored authoritarianism and the role of state institutions such as courts, parliaments, and religious bureaucracies in authoritarian political systems.
